L.A. Nonprofit Reactivates Prize for Female Playwrights

This year's award has been given to "20 Friends" by Michelle Carter.

A nonprofit women's club founded in Los Angeles in 1894 said Sunday it has reactivated a prize it awards to female playwrights, after nearly a century of inactivity.

The Ebell of Los Angeles has reactivated its Los Angeles Playwright Award to "encourage, inspire and celebrate out California women playwrights," prize chairwoman Cynthia Comsky said Sunday.

She noted that only 22 of the playwriting spots in the nation are held by women.

This year's award has been given to "20 Friends" by Michelle Carter. A stage reading will be performed next Sunday, May 4, at the historic Ebell of Los Angeles at 741 S. Lucerbne Blvd., at Wilshire Boulevard.
