La Vida Loca galeria Presents the art of Beth Cheng

La Vida Loca galeria is presenting the art of artist/poet Beth Cheng.

Beth Cheng is a poet and collage artist, who now realizes that for most of her life she has been following the Pet Shop Boys á la the Village People’s injunction to “Go West!”

Born in D.C., her journey west started with college and
the lovely loveliness of Madison, Wisconsin, regression east to Michigan, and then full force escape to California.

Her art saw public light in its first show in 2009, was featured in Theatre Out’s production of “tick, tick … Boom!” in 2010, and enjoys a monthly downtown L.A. after-artwalk residency at the Five Stars Bar.

Starting October 8, in conjunction with NELA, we present opening night with Beth Cheng, here at La Vida Loca galeria. She will have multiple works of art available for purchase as well as be here personally for the evening between 6pm and 10pm. Her art will stay till the end of the month.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I once told someone I made collage art and her response was “Oh so, you’re crafty” and my retort was “Well, there’s that, but I’m also artsy fartsy.” By artsy fartsy, I mean That I try to take everything in, the art and the fart, the good with the bad, and somehow my art makes some sense out of it all. I can’t draw or paint worth a damn, so I use images I find in newspapers, magazines, books and mailers to compress the profusion and richness of life into a piece while the layering, blending and overall color scheme are largely spontaneously crafted. I’m also a poet and it often takes me weeks, if not months, to find the right words to distill emotion into a poem; with collage art, no distillation seems necessary, emotion is channeled raw quickly and weirdly orderly.
