Eastside Handmade to Spotlight Local Makers

The arts and crafts market will feature up to 20 local vendors.

Highland Park resident Sheryl Cancellieri is used to bringing people together.

The self-described maker and idea generator has produced trade shows for Downtown's L.A. Mart in the past, and is now looking to bring that spirit of artistic collaboration to her home neighborhood.

Cancellieri, in collaboration with the owners of York Boulevard's Shopclass, will launch Eastside Handmade on Saturday, April 13.

The independent artisan market will feature the handiwork over 20 artists and crafters, all of whom live on Los Angeles' Eastside.

"We really wanted to give local artists a venue to display their works," Cancellieri said. "Everyone who is participating has to live on the Eastside, and they need to produce things that are handmade."

Having lived in Highland Park for nine years, Cancellieri said producing a local market has long been an ambition.

"The neighborhood is ecclectic. It's a different kind of L.A. living. It's very family oriented, but with access to urban living, she said.

Eastside Handmade will premiere for NELAart's Second Saturday Gallery Night from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the lot behind Shopclass, 5215 York Boulevard.
