Then and Now: The Changing Face of Figueroa

Recalling the Sunbeam Theatre and the Highland Park Herald.

The Sunbeam. The Herald. The Greater Highland Park Association.

Nearly a Century ago, these institutions formed a strip of entertainment, information and civic engagement along the 5700 block of North Figueroa Street (which was then known as Pasadena Avenue).

A lot has changed since those days, of course. The Highland Park Herald has long since ceased publication. The Sunbeam's arched sign was removed, and the theater eventually replaced by U.S. Office Machines--another local landmark.

Shade trees are also prominent along Figueroa and, of course, the model Ts parked along the roadway are gone.
