Sycamore Grove Bandshell Defaced—Again

Gang-related tags are back on the same spot, crying out for a more permanent fix.

A little more than four months after gang-related tags appeared on the Sycamore Grove Park bandshell, another ugly scrawl is back there again, covering the entire width of the bandshell’s shutter, a post-Halloween reminder that vandalism of public property remains one of the neighborhood’s creepiest realities.

Last time around, it took about a week for anti-graffiti crews to clean up the mess after Councilmember Gil Cedillo’s staff responded, on his very first day in the CD 1 office, to e-mails from a Highland Park resident who is the neighborhood’s unofficial watchdog for graffiti and abandoned furniture.

And while the crews will surely paint over the tags soon enough, it will only be a matter of time before their band-aid fix will be needed again. So, might it be time for Cedillo’s office, with the cooperation of Northeast LAPD perhaps, to think about installing surveillance cameras around the bandshell?
