Photo Gallery: Peace Inc. Vigil Mourns Those Lost to Gang Violence

The vigil occurred on the same day as an early morning homicide in Cypress Park.

On the same day that police reported and another critically injured in a gang-related schooting in Cypress Park, community members gathered on South Avenue 64 in Highland Park to mourn the many young men and women from the neighborhood who have suffered a similar fate.

The vigil, hosted by local organization Peace Inc., was held in remembrance of those who had fallen victim to Northeast Los Angeles' culture of gang violence.

Community members were invited to pray and share their stories, said youth Advocate from the Notheast Church of Los Angeles, Joe Carmona.

Though Los Angles Police Department Capt. William Murphy has reported that in the Northeast Division, the events of early Saturday morning were a harsh reminder that violence can still strike nearby.

According to LAPD Sgt. Douglas Bowler, 19-year-old Jose Antonio Madera was shot dead by suspected gang members early Saturday morning near the 2000 block of West Isabel Street in Cypress Park. Another man who was also shot during the incident, 19-year-old Christopher Rodriguez, is currently listed as being in critical condition.
