Palm Frond Trimming Blocks Travel Lane on Figueroa

Palm fronds fall from the sky on Monday afternoon.

Motorists will experience slight delays on North Figueroa Street Monday afternoon, as a portion of one travel lane will be closed for tree maintenance.

Thrifty Tree Service is trimming palm fronds on North Figueroa Street near the Highland Park Recreation Center on Monday. As of noon, the right hand travel lane heading south was closed for a brief stretch from the Recreation Center to the train tracks at Avenue 61.

It was pretty cool, I wanted to go back and take pictures. The guy was descending the tree, hopping slowly down the length in one of those special harnesses. The fronds would float down just within the boundaries of the cones they laid out. Drama, sheer drama. Just how tall are they? 60 feet?

Can't say, Frank. Was riding the bike past this morning when I took the picture. Came very close to getting domed by one. And, yeah, watching the fronds fall was strangely mesmerizing.
