Fresco Community Market Celebrates Grand Opening

Owners are commended by City Council for "going the extra mile."

Nearly two months after first opening their doors on Monterey Road in Hermon, owners Jon Murga and Helena Jubany celebrated a ribbon cutting in front of on Saturday afternoon.

Customers lined up for free samples at kiosks, ordered deli sandwiches and survyed the market's growing selection of fresh produce.

Though it's still early, Fresco seems to have brought a measure of stability to a location that has been home to a host of failed mom and pop stores.

In addition to offering a reliable market, Murga also stated his and Jubany's committment to reinvesting their profit in the neighborhood and providing work to the area's homeless.

"Helena and I are committed to having a positive impact on the homeless population while showing other business in Los Angles what's possible," he said.

Councilmember Jose Huizar commended the market owners "for going the extra mile" to ensure that Fresco would meet the needs of Hermon residents.

"They really wenet the extra mile, not just to open a market where people could get their milk, but to really listen to what the community wanted," Huizar said.

Murga and Jubany were also awared Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's Shop L.A. Business of the month award on Saturday afternoon.

"Our vision was to have a market that was a center of a community, a place where they could meet," Jubany said to packed crowd of customers gathered inside the lobby of Fresco Market. "What makes this place special is the people, our staff and the customers."
