Businesses Celebrate PARK(ing) Day in Highland Park

The community makes the most of the "park" in metered "parking."

Five small businesses clustered together along York Boulevard celebrated PARK(ing) Day Friday by covering the sidewalk and metered parking space in front of the Skinny Studio on 5025 York Blvd. from around 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The fake grass had easy chairs and a bench wired with electrical outlets meant for laptop computers. The occasion was PARK(ing) Day, a worldwide event in which citizens take over parking spaces for several hours and use them for community purposes ranging from outdoor office work to just hanging out.

No money was put into the parking meters in front of Skinny Studio, according to Linda Graveline, owner of the Usui Reiki studio. "A parking enforcement officer went by several times and didn't say a peep, she said.
