Highland Park Old L.A. Farmers Market Manager Christopher Nyerges is scheduled to teach a practical course in survival skills at Pasadena City College, starting today, Friday, Jan. 24. The course will be taught on five Fridays, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Topics include edible and medicinal uses of local wild plants; primitive fire-making techniques; how to find, store and purify water; looking for shelter in the wilderness or in the event of an earthquake; creating and using tools and weapons. 2. Friends of Mount Washington Elementary School Casino Night
The Friends of Mount Washington School is organizing its first-ever fundraising casino night today, Friday, Jan. 24, at the historic Alamo Building, located on 6401 Ruby St. The event starts at 6 p.m. and ends at 10 a.m. Tickets are $35 per person or $60 a couple. In addition to blackjack, roulette, craps and other games, the casino night includes two VIP poker tournaments limited to only 20 players.
