LAPD Warns About Rise in Home Burglaries

Eight home burglaries were reported in Highland Park in February.

After last week warning Northeast Los Angeles residents of a rise in "distraction burglaries," the Los Angeles Police Department on Tuesday released some tips that can be used to prevent such crimes. From the Los Angeles Police Department: Criminals sometimes use force to break through a door, but often, they use a scam to get us to open the door for them—bypassing our deadbolts and security systems in the process.  The LAPD wants to make the community aware of this problem and provide tips to avoid becoming a victim. First, look before unlocking your door's deadbolt lock.  Install a peep hole if your door does not have one. Remember, you do not need to unlock the door to talk. They may state there is an emergency, so help them by calling …

Final Redistricting Maps Released: Vote Scheduled for Wednesday

Not much has changed in Highland Park and Mount Washington in the latest proposal.

The shape of Los Angeles' political landscape for the next decade is one step closer to being finalized. The Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission--after a marathon meeting last Wednesday--released their final boundary proposal on Monday. While some last minute tweaks have taken place far from Northeast Los Angeles--most notably the return of Westchester to Councilman Bill Rosendahl's CD 11 and Councilman José Huizar's coup of the coveted Downtown district--not much has changed for Highland Park and Mount Washington residents. As in previously proposed maps, Highland Park would still be mostly encompassed by Council District 1--with a sliver of Garvanza being used by Council District 14 as a link between Eagle Rock in the north…

Try these, at the commission's own site: http://redistricting2011.lacity.org/LACITY/draftMap.html ...they're easier to zoom in on, but they've also made the boundary lines so very thick, that if you're close to a border between districts, if may be a bit difficult to know for sure on which side you actually have ended up.   more ›

The History of President's Day: Washington Versus Lincoln

The federal holiday was originally celebrated on Feb.22, but changed in 1968.

For many, President’s Day means nothing more than a three day weekend and shopping, but the holiday was originally meant to commemorate our country’s founding father—President George Washington. Originally signed into law by President Rutherford B. Hayes in 1879 and implemented in 1880, the federal holiday was the first to single out a citizen’s birthdate and only impacted District of Columbia federal workers at the time. In 1885, President Grover Cleveland signed a law extending the holiday to all federal workers in thirty-eight states, according to the National Archives and Records Administration. Less than a century later, the holiday was moved to the third Monday of February, largely spurred by the belief the shift would reduce …

Most of the vehicles have been taken from the street and parking lots of local businesses," said Senior Lead Officer Nina Preciado in a statement released by e-mail on Thursday. "They have occurred in the late night/early morning hours. The vehicles taken continue to be the Honda and Toyota's. Please take a few minutes to make sure your vehicle is secure. Montecito Heights Residents Adamantly Oppose Flat Top Development

Residents said new development would "rape" community.

A group of about 50 locals filled the Montecito Heights Senior Citizen Center on Thursday evening to assert their opposition to the proposed development of a parcel of hilltop property known as Flat Top. The Foursquare Foundation--which owns the 40-acre parcel--has tentative plans to develop 36 lots on Flat Top, each about 20,000-square feet in size, according developer Vince Daly. The Four Square Gospel Church has owned 37 acres of Flat Top for about 80 years--the parcel purchased in order to erect three radio towers that would broadcast the sermons of founder Sister Aimee Semple McPherson. Click here to see Patch's Previous Story on the Flat Top Development. Daly, who attended Thursday evening's Montecito Heights Improvement Association …

Four Square Church to Discuss 'Flat Top' Development Plans Tonight

The church is considering building home on the 37-acre parcel of hilltop land.

Is the Four Square Gospel Church, longtime owners of 37 acres of hilltop property in Montecito Heights, ready to develop one of Los Angeles last remaining open spaces? A community meeting is scheduled to take place on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Montecito Heights Senior Center, regarding the church's plans to develop 40homes on a hilltop parcel commonly referred to by locals as Flat Top. Roy Payan, President of the Montecito Heights Improvement Association (MHIA), sent the following email to members earlier this week. I was contacted by Vince Daly the developer who is proposing a major development on Flat Top on behalf of Four Square Gospel Church, who are the owners. As he promised back at our last meeting with him in Nov. 2011, he is …

Report: Assembly Drops $200K Fighting Spending Records Suit

The lawsuits sparked by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino's protest over having his budget slashed as "retaliation" for a vote wound up costing the Assembly nearly $200,000 to fight, The Sacramento Bee reports.

The California State Assembly did not want its budget opened to the public, and it spent $200,000 trying to keep it under wraps. But a judge disagreed with the Assembly in a lawsuit brought by the Sacramento Bee and Los Angeles Times, ruling that the spending records of the Assembly must be disclosed publicly. The suit was sparked by the claims of local Assemblyman Anthony Portantino that his budget was slashed in retaliation for a vote he made. Portantino is a Democrat who represents Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Highland Park, South Pasadena, Monrovia, Arcadia, part of San Marino and other San Gabriel Valley communities. The Assembly spent $123,945 fighting the suit and was ordered to cover about $75,000 in legal fees accrued by the …

Portantino Introduces Emergency Planning Bill for Utilities

The bill would require all utilities to update their emergency response plan every two years.

A local lawmaker has introduced a bill that would require all utilities to update their emergency response plan every two years. The bill, AB 1650, was introduced by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino as a response to the November wind storms that resulted in hundreds of thousands losing power. At recent state hearings, investigators revealed that Southern California Edison's emergency response plans had outdated contact information for state officials.  Edison officials also admitted to knowing very little about Los Angeles County's official emergency response unit. The bill was introduced by Assemblyman Anthony Portantino, who represents Altadena, La Cañada Flintridge, Highland Park, South Pasadena, Monrovia, Arcadia and other San Gabriel …

Advocacy Groups Submit Alternative Redistricting Maps

Maps would unite predominantly Asian and Latino Communities into their own City Council Districts.

In January, residents from Koreatown to Highland park filled St. Peter's Italian Catholic Church in Chinatown to make a plea--unite our communities. For many of those residents--whose ethnically homogeneous neighborhoods have been divided among multiple Los Angeles City Council Districts for decades--those pleas appeared to have gone unanswered when the Redistricting Commission released their proposed maps on Jan. 26. Though the maps mostly unite Highland Park, Mount Washington remains divided between three council Districts--1, 13 and 14. The neighborhood of Garvanza is also split from the rest of Highland Park, serving as a link between Eagle Rock and the booming Dowtown District. With Dowtown's population increasing to about 51,000--up …

Rep. Judy Chu Blasts Super Bowl Ad as ‘Hateful’ Against Asians

Local Congresswoman Judy Chu appeared on CNN Wednesday to voice her outrage at a regional political Super Bowl ad that many say is racist and stereotypes Asians.

A regional Super Bowl ad for Michigan Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra garnered further disapproval Wednesday when Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park), the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress, spoke out on CNN against the "violent hateful" ad. Chu is running for Congress in 2012 in the newly drawn 27th Congressional District that includes Altadena, South Pasadena, San Marino, Rosemead, Monterey Park, and San Gabriel, Glendora and parts of Monrovia and Claremont. The Super Bowl commercial depicts an Asian woman speaking in broken English and thanking Hoekstra’s opponent Debbie Stabenow—called Debbie SpenditNow in the ad—for spending so much and giving American jobs to Asians.
