Saying goodbye to a short-lived resident of York Boulevard.
People come and go in one’s life. Especially here in the big city. We meet people and to one degree or another we get to know them and then they are gone. Seems like we forget most of those people; that’s just the way these kind of things go. This is no less true for those of us who like to support small businesses. They come and go, and we tend forget most of them. One of our local gallery boutiques is closing next month. La Vida Loca Galeria will be no more after the end of March. This shop in Highland Park is a unique place--and that will make it much more unforgettable. Owner Anita Acosta tells Patch, “We have had a wonderful ride with the store. This store was never about money, but was purely a way to bring community together. The …

"Quixote in L.A.," an independent film shot in Highland Park, takes a unique view at the lives of Mexican Americans in Highland Park.
Producer Kyle Wegner contacted Patch earlier this week with a link to the above trailer for Quixote in L.A., which was shot last year in Highland Park. The plot tells the story of male protagonist who decides to steal a conquistador's uniform from the Southwest Museum of the American Indian--but, of course, there's much more to it than that. "Our goal was to make a film that both [writer/director Eric Putzi and I] would be interested in watching, one that portrays the Mexican American community and Mexican Americans in an atypical way as compared to many Hollywood produced films," Wegner said. "The film can be described as both satire and comedy. Mexican American culture has a long history and tradition of satire." Quixote received an …

"A Tribute to Mike Kelley" will open on Saturday, April 2.
LAUSD's board of directors has asked Superintendent John Deasy to provide alternatives to a $557 million budget cut proposal that would have eliminated the district's elementary arts program.
The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Education has delayed a vote on a $557 million budget reduction plan, requesting instead that Superintendent John Deasy return with alternatives that save jobs and prevent program cuts, The Los Angeles Times is reporting. From the Los Angeles Times ... the board directed Supt. John Deasy to work with his staff and teacher unions to develop a proposal that avoids eliminating these and other programs. The extra time will allow the parties to consider new state budget information, said board member Steve Zimmer, who proposed the delay. As previously reported on Patch, the board was prepared to consider three potential "budget balancing" options. Option A would have called for the board to make…

Here's a look at what food trucks will be appearing at Figueroa Produce's EAT food truck feast.
After a hiccup in November when Figueroa Produce Market's Dinner-on-the-Go Food Truck Fest was briefly without an organizer, the rolling gourmet gathering has returned to form. Figueroa Produce's owners--Luis Quismorio, Ruben Perez and Anthony Bermudez--have been hosting a diverse roster of gourmet trucks since taking over the reigns of the event from former coordinator Debbie Lee. Lee, chef of rolling Korean truck Ahn-Joo, stepped down to establish a brick and mortar location in Glendale. Here's the lineup for Tuesday, February 14. The proposed cuts would completely eliminate arts funding at the elementary school level.
The Los Angeles Unified School District Board of Directors will on Tuesday consider $557 million in budget reductions, including the complete elimination of elementary school arts funding. According to a board of education report, the board is considering three potential "budget balancing" options. Option A would call for the board to make no cuts, and bank on receiving $557 million proposed state and local revenue initiatives. In the second option, the board would make $194 million in cuts, while using $362 in new revenue sources to address the district's ongoing structural deficit. Through the the third option, in which the district would receive no new revenue sources, the board would need to make $557 million in cuts, including the $18…
