Rep. Judy Chu Blasts Super Bowl Ad as ‘Hateful’ Against Asians
Local Congresswoman Judy Chu appeared on CNN Wednesday to voice her outrage at a regional political Super Bowl ad that many say is racist and stereotypes Asians.
A regional Super Bowl ad for Michigan Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra garnered further disapproval Wednesday when Rep. Judy Chu (D-Monterey Park), the first Chinese American woman elected to Congress, spoke out on CNN against the "violent hateful" ad.
The Super Bowl commercial depicts an Asian woman speaking in broken English and thanking Hoekstra’s opponent Debbie Stabenow—called Debbie SpenditNow in the ad—for spending so much and giving American jobs to Asians.
See the full commercial attached to this article.
"I was offended; I was stunned," Chu said on CNN. "This is meant to stereotype and meant to blame Chinese persons and Asian persons for stealing American jobs. The economy is in a downturn but there are lots of reasons for it and the ad basically blames Asian Americans for that."
Wars and tax cuts for the wealthy were among the reasons Chu gave for the poor economy.
Chu’s husband, Assemblyman Mike Eng (D-Alhambra), who represents San Marino and other San Gabriel Valley cities, blasted the ad in a statement Tuesday.
See reaction from Eng and others here.
Hoekstra defended the ad Monday, telling Detroit's WJR-AM, "Clearly China is one of many countries benefiting from our irresponsible spending. To highlight that is absolutely appropriate," according to Yahoo News.
Chu said she issued a statement and wrote a letter to Hoekstra’s campaign and will continue to pressure him to pull the ad.
What do you think of Hoekstra's Super Bowl ad? Is it racist or hateful? Tell us in the comments.

Is the Hoekstra ad hateful or racist? Maybe, but it is undoubtedly bigoted because it panders to that very worst part of the American psyche, the Archie Bunker in all of us, the benighted underbelly of America, i.e., the uneducated White working class. You know, the ones Gingrich is so aggressively trying to hoodwink.

It also need to be noted that the jobs weren't stolen, they were willfully sent overseas by corporation, many American owned, which tired of paying living wages and benefits to American workers, the very ones whose participation makes our economy strong.

Most of the comments regarding this TV AD come from Democrats who defend the big spending in Congress. I'm against racist anything.....but you all have missed the big picture. China is killing our economy and laughing at us. Get your heads out of the sand and start defending American jobs instead of Obama's World Government agenda.

You claim you are against anything racist, well then tell me how you are not against the use of an actor speaking broken english to get their message accross. I am sure you can see why non racist people may have missed the big picture.

I am not a racist either. I'm not. Really. But we need to "wake up America!" to how evil the Chinese, President Obama, and, oh yeah, the Democrats really are.
Good grief, this is the most clueless thread on Patch in a while, and that's saying something. Even before the piece of racist drivel under discussion from Michigan won the coveted "pure genius" award from Susan Rocha!
C'mon, right-wingdingers, let's try to get serious and work in some anti-gay, pro- Prop. 8 rhetoric on this thread! Frosting on the cake, and all that.

The commercial is pure genius. All it talks about is spending. How can that be racist? The message is so clear cut and to the point that it is scary. The commercial does what it is suppose to do and that is tell people what our government officials are doing. Lynn is right. The truth hurts.

Susan, why did they have an actor using broken english to get their message accross? I am sure you can see why this ad was upsetting to some folks?

Brian, they use an actor speaking broken English to impersonate a Chinese National who might very well not speak in perfect English. The "Chinese National" is thanking America for sending jobs to them. I'm sure there are plenty of people in China who appreciate the work.

Listening to Judy Chu call this ad violent is the height of hypocrisy. I call the fact that Judy Chu is working her butt off promoting an unwanted toll tunnel freeway intended to carry pollution and congestion causing cargo trucks from the ports of LA/LB to the 210 freeway with imported goods through cities her neighbors live in (not her) is a real act of violence and aggression towards others. The only people who want the tunnel are the ones who will rake in trillions of dollars from imported goods. Judy then calls the people who live here and don’t want their homes destroyed “elitists and NIMBY’s”.
She needs to loose the next election. Her constituents are not being told the truth. Bringing a tripling of traffic (94,000 daily trucks) to this area will affect them too. Not all of those trucks will use the 210. Many will spill over onto the 10fwy too. Her voters should look into who is financing her campaign.

How many Americans are trying to get in to China on any given day. The US is a destination of choice for oppressed people all over the globe not just the Chinese. But when this many people from one country swamp our "bedroom" communities with their "tiger children" and their complete disregard for the environment and the basic rules of this country - like paying income taxes. Something needs to be said.

Once again we see how low of a stunt Judy Chu and her husband; alos a politician, will stoop to to get attention to thier pathetic carrers. The us of the race card by a minority to try and belittle another person who dares refer to a minority in any way is the most racial act anyone can resort to. Judy Chu YOU ARE THE RACIST.

Right on. Maybe the point isn't that more Asians in America do well, it's that more try.
Putting it another way, if you didn't do well in school it might just also be you and your parents' fault - not just your teachers.
So, you go United States House of Representatives Member Judy Chu! Now there's a real, all-American, hero.

All I have to say to this is: There once was an Austrian guy who told the Germans that the JEWS are taking all the money from them! I don't know about you - but that was my first thought when I saw the ad....Americans, aren't you SMARTER (than those frightened sheepish Germans back then) -especially since you've all seen how these kind of campaigns end?

I saw the ad---stupid. I don't, however, see that it is "violent" and "hateful". What was violent about it? An actress pretending to be in China, speaking broken English, is gleeful because their economy is booming, and America is the reason.
What does this have to do with Asian Americans? They're American last time I checked. No one mentioned any Asian Americans in the ad. No one is blaming them in this ad. They are citizens, they are part of this economy. What's the issue?
Truth is, China does hold a lot of our debt.
BIGGER TRUTH: They supply us with most of our products. You know, your iPhone (which I am sure Ms. Chu used to send out her texts to all the tv stations so she could get some publicity as a professional victim) and let's not even go into all the stuff you buy at Target. Or Walmart. Most of it made by slaves working in horrible conditions 14-16 hours a day. Chinese people. To me that is far more violent and hateful than this idiotic ad. Ms. Chu, why don't you address those facts? Hmm? Why don't you go to the companies here who set up factories there and demand some accountability? Then again, you might need their donations.
Easier to play victim on television and get your name out there. Last time I checked, Monterey Park isn't in Michigan. Don't you have enough work to do here? Boring day to day local stuff--roads, schools, parks, etc? Try that.

Actors are paid to act. That's what took place in this add. The sad part is the actor did not know the ad was paid for by corrupt unions......and they are not very happy.

I write only to point out this ad was an official Pete Hoekstra ad - he's a Republican. It was not paid for by unions at all - corrupt or not. A review of his contributors shows not a single union donated anything to him. So you are entitled to your own opinion, just not your own made up facts to advance your anti-union agenda.

A big problem with this ad is that it attacks the Asian people in general--not the governments, the businesses, the policies, nor the politicians (except Debbie Stabenow, of course) involved in our debt situation.
The everyday workers in Asia are NOT to be blamed--they are just trying to make a living like everyone else.

I find the advert extremely offensive. It attacks Chinese, Asians, and well non-Americans. It says China is giving a big F-you and a Nelson "Ha-Ha!" to Americans who are unemployed or struggling. It targets the fears and stereotypes of China and re-affirms them. It is good she references the beating death of Vincent Chin because he was mistaken for a job stealing Japanese automaker. Unfortunately, Asian Americans are still seen as perpetual foreigners, regardless of how many generations have lived in America. Americans, even Asians, can't differentiate between Asian groups by looking at them and group them in a single box, which is usually Chinese. The same goes for Latinos, where many just think they are Mexicans.
So while you might think this ad is harmless, anti-Chinese rhetoric has been exploding like wildfire in recent years. Verbal and physical attacks have victimized innocent people because of illegal immigration, Islamic terrorism, sexual orientation, jobs in China etc, because of harmless ads.
So I think it is good that Rep. Judy Chu is vocal against the ad. There are very few Asian Americans that can garner attention to address issues that affect the AA community.

the "parody" version of the video is hilarious... and, anyone seriously offended really need to lighten up a bit, imo... that said, i went back and watched the "original" version of the ad... and, i guess i can sorta see why ppl are offended by that one. the only problem is, the logic behind the "original" ad is completely wrong... ***
america IS, in fact, a consumer-driven economy. and, we DO seem to have an obsession buying up lotsa "inexpensive" products . we want $400 iPods, not $1,500 ones. we want $20 jeans from Old Navy and not $100 jeans. therefore, the only way is to pay to have it made with cheap labor overseas.
these consumer products would not sell well if they were produced domestically at domestic labor rates. so, the fact that we are exploiting asian labor to make cheap goods for ourselves and then complaining that we are driving asian economies at the expense of the u.s. economy is kind of an oxy moron argument.

I do not find anyone using broken english racist. All political parties do that. Some hispanic groups do it to help show their culture. Nothing wrong with it.
Some miss the point. This is not about giving jobs to China. It is all about spending, spending, spending. It is all about all the spending Rep. Judy Chu has done that increases the deficit so then we borrow more money from China.
People read too much into this commercial. It is all about the spending or spent it not.

I think Chu is a nut. How can this political aid be against or offensive to Chinese Americans? I think she is just after attention. This is typical of Mayor Villariagosa or Al Sharpton, looking for any opportunity to get in front of a camera. The Chinese actor is supposed to be a Chinese in China not a Chinese Amercian in the US. If they had gone to China and hired an actor who spoke English but not perfect would this then be offensive also? And by the way, I'm sure lots of Chinese in China do at times ride bikes near rice fields.

Back in the late 60s in high school, they decided to teach us to be patriotic by bringing in some greasy headed guy with a fake Russian accent who was talking smack about the USA. Countless students protested the egregious propaganda piece, which demeaned the intelligence of the students. The school newspaper staff wrote an article about how blatantly bigoted this was and that students could learn the evils of communism without being talked to about it as though they were idiots. It got to be such an ugly situation, the journalism advisor resigned in protest. Meanwhile, across town, they wouldn't let Angela Davis speak at the college (I think it was Mt. Sac). This commercial says we still haven't learned. We disrespect groups of people and demean the intelligence of the collective by spewing hate-filled propaganda pieces. I'd say we've come a long way, Baby, but it looks like we're still sitting on the street corner of Prejudice and Hate.

This commercial does not show any prejudice or hate. All it talks about is spending. The commerical clearly shows that the Rep. spends lots of money and the other guy will not. It shows a happy Asian lady because Rep. Judy Chu is helping their economy by spending lots of money. Great commercial. Cuts right to the point. Spend it now or Spent it not. Sounds like something a three year old should be able to understand.

Everyone should just chill out, anything and everything you do involving a different race can be depicted as racist. Seriously was this add a little out of line? Clearly, however when you listen to the reasoning he gives this commercial it makes sense. His reasoning was not that he hates Asians or that Asians are stupid. Our jobs are going to Asia and other countries for that matter and it is because of the decisions made by our government including Debby Stabenow.
