Who is Highland Park-Mount Washington's Person of the Year: Voting Closes Today!

Place your vote in the comments.

Update:

Have you voted for Highland Park-Mount Washington's person of the year yet? The deadline is set for 2 p.m. on Friday, January 6. Pick the person you believe deserves the distinction and post their comments section.

We'll tally the votes over the weekend and reveal the winner on Monday.

Update:

We've got a close race for Highland Park-Mount Washington Patch's "Person of the Year." Rather than rush the vote, we'll keep the polls open until Friday, January 6.

As we've previously reported, after the votes are counted we'll feature the winner with a story on Patch.

Update:

Last night, a few readers expressed concerns to me that there might be some funny business going in the voting system--and at first I was disinclined to believe them.

I took a look at the stats for this story this afternoon, though, and it's hard to deny that some folks are trying to take advantage of the voting system; there are about five times as many votes in the poll as there are page views. It's simple math, some folks are voting more than once.

I'd like to believe that we can all trust each other to vote just once and get a true sense of who we think really made a great contribution to our community this year. With that in mind, I've taken down the poll, and I'm asking voters to instead place their vote in the comments section.

Our purpose here is honor the leading lights in our community; folks who do things right. So, let's do this right.

***

Last week, we asked you to submit your nominations for Highland Park-Mount Washington's person(s) of the year, and you responded with a long list of locals who have made valuable and lasting contributions to our neighborhoods.

Nominations closed at 5 p.m. on Monday; the time to vote is here.

Use to the poll below to cast your ballot for the individual (or duos) who have played the greatest role in making the Arroyo a better place to live over the last twelve months.

The nominees are:

I realize the deadline for nominations has passed, but I do think an exception might be made for this very important community activist who passed earlier today -- Marilyn Sanchez . . . "Ms. Neighborhood Watch" of Montecito Heights, and the "dean" of Hollenbeck precincts NW activists -- helping get other watches started. I would cast all my votes for her, and send my love and condolences to her husband and soulmate, Ernie, a former 2-term ASNC President, and past staffer of Councilmember Reyes:

>A wonderful community activist has left us. Marilyn Sanchez, the long-time leader of Montecito Heights Neighborhood Watch, passed away early this morning. Our deepest condolences go to her devoted husband Ernie.
>
>Marilyn has always been one of the heroines of our neighborhood. Her death is a huge loss for us all.

Is there a rule about voting more then one time? Because I believe people are voting much more then 1 time?

Hey y'all. I can by no means guarantee that this is a perfect voting system, but I can say this -- I tried cheating several times last night to see if it was possible, and I don't think it is. If you find a loophole, please let me know and I'll do my best to fix it.

Monica, I'm not sure how I could require an email address for voters. This may be the best system we've got.

I don't even think there's a way to make this voting entirely fair. People can make various accounts too and vote. Anyway, I am placing my vote for Teri and Paul Bonsell.

I vote for Angelina Saenz. She is making a difference one child at a time. I sent my son to Aldama to learn to read and write, add and subtract, and play. He comes home with so much more. Self worth, sense of culture, tolerance and pride! In other words she rocks!

To the above commenter: WTF! Janet Alvarado Dodson has way too much integrity to ever nominate herself. She shows up everywhere for everything, and supports every cause to move us forward, AND she is extremely nice. She gets my vote. (although I believe everyone on the list is deserving) Cluck cluck for Janet

I would like to vote for ANGELINA SAENZ. I think it is so amazing, and well deserved, that she is nominated with "the big dogs" of the community; program directors, business owners, and councilmen and women. Angelina Saenz is not only an innovative teacher working in a Highland Park elementary school, she is also the team leader for Aldama's dual language program. The amount of time and effort that she puts into coordinating meetings, researching best practices, and mentoring fellow teachers is abundant. (And all of this is in addition to her dedicated work as a full-time kindergarten teacher!) Although she is but one woman, her outreach and influence far surpasses her reach, and will continue to inspire, challenge, and improve our education system for our children, families, fellow educators, and community. I am so proud of her and feel extremely honored to have the opportunity work alongside her.

I vote for Angelina Saenz!! Dedicated mother of two small children, community member and lead teacher for Aldama's Dual Language Program. Her bottom line is collaborating with colleagues, parents and administrators to ensure a world-class public school program that meets the cultural, lingustic, developmental and academic needs of children in Northeast Los Angeles!

I vote that we end this whole thing and have a shout out for all of these fine folks.
If there is lack of honesty in voting, then just call the whole thing over. Everyone is deserving. We all know of some real "unsung" heroes of the community, who deserve to be acknowledged, along side the nominees. I see, or hear about them them everyday; like a friend's mom, who always walks with a pocketful of seeds, which she plants along the way. She's really my hero, though we have never met. All here are deserving, so I vote to end this thing now, and declare all winners.
Cluckety- cluck- cluck!
