'Parklets' Planning to be Finalized Wednesday

On Wednesday evening, community members will be able to review the final draft plan for the street porch and finalize the locations of the historic street lights.

The plans for the first short-term projects in Jose Huizar's "new York" Vision plan are scheduled to be finalized on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m. at El Chapin Restaurant on 5010 York Boulevard.

During a series of meetings in the spring, community members chose to use the $100,000 set aside for improvements on York Boulevard by Huizar to construct parklets and install historic lights.

The parklets, or street porches, would transform sidewalk space into mini parks where pedestrians can sit and look at public art. Highland Park would be the first community in Los Angeles to build parklets, should they plan be executed.

The parklets have been a source of some disagreement among community members, with opponents saying they are a waste of money and would be a magnet for local homeless.

Patch commenter Ezio Giraldo commented on a recent Patch , saying "hipsters just want a place to display their crappy art shows outdoors."

Others, like local business owner Cathi Milligan, said she welcomed the innovation and change that is coming to the boulevard."
