New Owner of Verdugo Pet Shop is Brentwood Based Company

GPI has developed numerous large scale retail properties in Southern California.

The new owners of one of Highland Park's hottest commercial real estate properties is the Brentwood-based GPI Companies.

The 3,000-sq. ft. but the new owner's name was kept under wraps by NAI Capital Agent Marie Taylor.

On Wednesday, Janet Dodson of the confirmed that GPI were the new owners.

"We've been in contact them with because we wanted to use the store-front for displays during Second Saturday Gallery Night. At first they seemed interested, but we have not heard back recently," Dodson said. "We have no idea what their plans are for the building."

Patch has contacted GPI Chief Investment Officer Jonathan Lischke in hopes of asking some questions, but has yet to hear back.

According to their website, "The GPI Companies pursues a targeted range of real estate investments, focusing on opportunities where value can be enhanced through operational expertise."

GPI projects include large-scale mixed-use and retail developments, including the West Hollywood Gateway, the Promenade at the Howard Hughes Center in West Hollywood and the Granada Hills Town Center.

The property stands adjacent to popular nightlife spots and and is passed every month by thousands of art lovers who flock to York's strip of galleries during NELA Art's Second Saturday Gallery Night.

It's also located within the business corridor primed for redevelopment through Councilman Jose Huizar's vision plan.

Some Patch commenters have written that they would prefer to see an established chain store, like a Starbucks, move into the property. However, York Boulevard is already home to two popular coffee shops, El Chapin (soon to be The Highland) and .

Others have said they would prefer to see the property occupied by a local business owner, who would actively participate in the ongoing revitalization of York between Avenues 50 and 56, which has been predominantly spurred by independent, locally owned shops.
