Man Dies After Being Shot in Highland Park on Sunday

Alfonso Garcia, who police believe is a resident of East Los Angeles, died in the hospital this morning from a gunshot wound he suffered in Highland Park on Sunday.

Rick Ortiz, supervisor of L.A.P.D. Northeast Division's gang unit, said Garcia was pronounced dead on Tuesday at about 11:10 a.m. from a single gunshot wound he suffered on Sunday at 7:45 p.m. inside a home on 300 Newland St. in Highland Park.

Garcia had been on life support since the shooting, Ortiz said

Ortiz said that the details from the crime scene suggest that the shooting was not gang related.

"The victim wasn't a gang member, he wasn't shot standing in the street with a bunch of friends. He was inside the house when he was shot," Ortiz said. "He was visiting friends in the area. It appeared to be a small gathering. It might have been a barbecue or something like that." 

Ortiz said that there were witnesses in the area at the time of the shooting, but so far they have not been forthcoming with a description of the shooter or his vehicle.

"So far all have for a description is a Hispanic male with black hair," Ortiz said "We don't have an eye color or a height or weight. We don't know what type of handgun was used."

He continued: "This doesn't seem like your typical gang related shooting. We're going to get to the bottom it."
