Know Your District: New Lines Finalized Sunday

New council districts will mean new representation for many Highland Park and Mount Washington residents.

You may not have noticed it, but on Sunday afternoon a dramatic shift occurred in Los Angeles' political landscape.

Following months of negotiations, threatened lawsuits and marathon meetings, the city's new council district boundaries were officially put into effect on Sunday, July 1.

As a result, many residents of Highland Park and Mount Washington will now deal with new council district representatives when they are in need of assistance from the city.

Formerly split between Council District 1 and Council District 14, Mount Washington will now be full encompassed within Council District 1.

Highland Park:

Highland Park remains divided between Council District 1 and 14, though now a greater portion is represented by Council District 1. The portion of Highland Park north of York Boulevard will remain in CD14, as will the Garvanza portion of the neighborhood, which will serve as a link between Eagle Rock and Downtown. The rest of the district will be represented by Council District 1.

Final maps can be viewed in the media box above. These maps, approved by the City Council in June, are significantly different than the ones approved Los Angeles City Council Redistricting Commission in February.
