Video: Community Leaves No Fruit Trees Behind at Milagro Allegro

Hundreds of fruit trees and thousands more veggie saplings were given away at community garden on Sunday.

The folks at Milagro Allegro Community Garden in Highland Park aren't ones for false advertising.

For example, when they dub a fruit tree giveaway at their 115 S. Ave 56 plot "," let's just say that it's advised you show up early if plan on taking home a fruit tree.

Case in point, the generous green thumbs at Milagro Allegro gave away 400 bare root trees in about 40 minutes on Sunday afternoon. Fortunately for the hundreds of people still waiting in line when the supply was wiped out, the Milagro crew had thousands of organic vegetable seedlings to hand out as well.

The bare root trees were given to Milagro Allegro by an anonymous benefactor, in an effort to support community gardens which were promoting agricultural sustainability in their neighborhoods, Master Gardener Milli Macen-Moore said.

As for the seedlings, those were provided by Los Angeles food and education policy guru Mud Baron, a friend of Milagro Allegro.

"He really saved the say," Macen-Moore said. "Everybody got to go home with something."

Founded in the 2009, the community garden's mission is to "integrate urban farming, art and education," said Milagro Allegro Co-Founder Nicole Gatto.

"We try to make it a very rich experience for Highland Park and beyond by offering classes, workshops and events like the one we're doing today."
